Daily Devotional: Psalms 142:1-7

Ps 142:1-7

1 I cry aloud to the LORD; I lift up my voice to the LORD for mercy. 2 I pour out my complaint before him; before him I tell my trouble. 3 When my spirit grows faint within me, it is you who know my way. In the path where I walk men have hidden a snare for me. 4 Look to my right and see; no one is concerned for me. I have no refuge; no one cares for my life. 5 I cry to you, O LORD; I say, "You are my refuge, my portion in the land of the living." 6 Listen to my cry, for I am in desperate need; rescue me from those who pursue me, for they are too strong for me. 7 Set me free from my prison, that I may praise your name. Then the righteous will gather about me because of your goodness to me.

1 Thess 2:1-2

1 You know, brothers, that our visit to you was not a failure. 2 We had previously suffered and been insulted in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in spite of strong opposition.

What kind of problems do you have today? What are you facing? While some are very minor and have no real consequences, there are other problems we face that are life threatening or life changing. But we all have our share of problems. The question is how are we going to deal with them and what are we going to allow them to do to us? Where do we turn, what are our options?

Jesus said that we should not worry about what we will wear or what we will eat because life is more than our food or our clothing. When we read that, we think about having to pick out clothes from a closet full or deciding if we will eat steak or chicken or eat at home or go out. For the one to whom he was speaking, it meant will we have any food to eat today or will we have anything to put on our bodies to protect us from the weather. These were major problems to them.

Major or minor problems, it really does not matter. The answer is to turn to God and trust him. He knows our needs. He has the ability to solve our problems. He cares about us so much more than he cares about the birds that fly around, and yet, he feeds them and he gives the flowers their beauty. What really matters is putting spiritual things first and striving to live for the Lord. God will provide.

O Lord God, my heavenly Father, thank you for providing me with all I need in life and giving me an abundance of material things. Thank you for the greatest gift of all, that of knowing you are taking care of me and protecting me from evil. Thank you for forgiving me of my sins and making me your child. Increase my faith so that I will trust you in all aspects of my life. Help me love you with all my heart and all of my soul and then love others, even as I love myself. Give your healing and your peace to those who are sick and hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus.
