Daily Devotional: Psalms 107:10-16

Ps 107:10-16

10 Some sat in darkness and the deepest gloom, prisoners suffering in iron chains, 11 for they had rebelled against the words of God and despised the counsel of the Most High. 12 So he subjected them to bitter labor; they stumbled, and there was no one to help. 13 Then they cried to the LORD in their trouble, and he saved them from their distress. 14 He brought them out of darkness and the deepest gloom and broke away their chains. 15 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men, 16 for he breaks down gates of bronze and cuts through bars of iron.

1 John 2:3-6

3 We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

One of the biggest lies of Satan is that serving God takes away our joy and that living for him gives us real joy and peace. The truth is that sin takes us captive and the longer it controls us the deeper our woes become. It is Jesus who can set us free from this bondage and in him we find true peace that the world cannot know and we find joy, even in the midst of trials and suffering. Serving him gives us a real reason to live and to endure whatever comes our way. Praise the Lord!

Nothing gives us more inner turmoil or less satisfaction in life than when we claim to be serving God and we know we are not doing so. Trying to live with one foot in the world and one foot in the service of Jesus brings us misery. This is because there is no greater cause of mental distress than a guilty conscience. This is not saying that we will ever be perfect in this life. It is saying that we can know in our hearts that we are doing our best to live for the Lord and do his will.

This is called “walking in the light” and it is here that the blood of Jesus continues to cleanse us and make us right with God. In this walk, the law of sin and death is nullified in Jesus Christ. By his forgiveness we know we are counted righteous.

Heavenly Father it is such a joy to be able to go to bed at night with a clear conscience and to know that you have forgiven me all of my sin. It is a blessing to be able to confess to you when I have done wrong and to know that my sin is removed from me and my account. Thank you for the freedom you give me by your grace. Help me use this freedom to become more like Jesus and to serve others both physically and spiritually. Be merciful to your nation, give our leaders wisdom and guide us in our elections. I humbly pray in Jesus name.
