Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:25-29

Ps 89:25-29

25 I will set his hand over the sea, his right hand over the rivers. 26 He will call out to me, 'You are my Father, my God, the Rock my Savior.' 27 I will also appoint him my firstborn, the most exalted of the kings of the earth. 28 I will maintain my love to him forever, and my covenant with him will never fail. 29 I will establish his line forever, his throne as long as the heavens endure.

2 Tim 2:8-10

8 Remember Jesus Christ, raised from the dead, descended from David. This is my gospel, 9 for which I am suffering even to the point of being chained like a criminal. But God's word is not chained. 10 Therefore I endure everything for the sake of the elect, that they too may obtain the salvation that is in Christ Jesus, with eternal glory.

For those who live in a monarchy, it is common to hear “Long live the Queen” or “Long live the King” from the subjects. This is a way that the citizens are invoking the blessing of God on their ruler. While the king or queen has power and can do as they please in their kingdom, it is recognized by all that God is in control and it is he alone who can install or remove the ruling powers. King Nebuchadnezzar had to learn this the hard way when he became conceited by his might.

Things are no different with a republic or dictatorship because God is still in control and there are no powers that be that were not established by God. He can put in who he desires and he can remove them at his bidding. No nation is so great or powerful that it can thwart his plans or his guidance. This was true during Bible times and it is true today so we need to trust him in all things.

There have been wicked rulers and there have been godly ones throughout history. Some have risen to claim deity for themselves and some have recognized that they were simply pawns in the hand of God. But he alone is sovereign Lord.

Jesus is our King, the King of kings and Lord of lords. He sits at the throne of God in heaven and rules over his people today. We are to submit to him and live for him, no matter in what nation we live or who is over us on earth. Our citizenship is in heaven and we praise the Son of God as our Savior and our Redeemer!

Heavenly Father it is a blessing to be your child and to know that you love me and have forgiven me for all the things I have done against you. Give me strength and self-control to be like Jesus. Give me your wisdom to live in this wicked world and not let it become a part of me. Help me love you, your kingdom and righteousness more than I love things, money and the temporary pleasures on earth. I  ask you to be with the leaders of our nation. Guide our elections and give victory to those who will honor you and seek to do your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
