Daily Devotional: Psalms 82:1-8

Ps 82:1-8

1 God presides in the great assembly; he gives judgment among the "gods": 2 "How long will you defend the unjust and show partiality to the wicked? Selah 3 Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. 4 Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. 5 "They know nothing, they understand nothing. They walk about in darkness; all the foundations of the earth are shaken. 6 "I said, 'You are "gods"; you are all sons of the Most High.' 7 But you will die like mere men; you will fall like every other ruler." 8 Rise up, O God, judge the earth, for all the nations are your inheritance.

James 2:5-7

5 Listen, my dear brothers: Has not God chosen those who are poor in the eyes of the world to be rich in faith and to inherit the kingdom he promised those who love him? 6 But you have insulted the poor. Is it not the rich who are exploiting you? Are they not the ones who are dragging you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who are slandering the noble name of him to whom you belong?

God is in control of the earth and all that is in it. While it may seem otherwise, because of all the evil that prevails, we know he is over it all. He does not bring evil upon us and he does not tempt us but he allows Satan to do both of these with certain limitations. This is because God made us with the ability to choose what we will do in life. We can decide to serve God, we can ignore him and his word or we can just reject him as God. It is our choice to make.

But every choice has consequences. We will answer to God for the decision we make about our lives. The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord. Jesus said that the majority of people will not serve God and will be lost, while fewer will yield their lives to him and live for him.

One of the great evils in this world is the trust we put in material things. This may be in wealth, possessions or even our abilities fueled by our ego. We cannot serve God and material things at the same time. To love the world is enmity with God and is futile because all these things will perish. Serving him yields eternal life.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love for me. Thank you for revealing your will so I can make the choice to serve you and to bring honor to your name. It is with humility that I accept my place in your family because I know it is by grace that my sins are forgiven. Use me to share your gospel as I demonstrate your love in my life. Guide our elections as they take place this year and give us leaders who will respect you and your word so that we may have peace in our land. Stop the virus in your own time. I pray in the name of Jesus my Lord and my King.
