Daily Devotional: Psalms 54:1-7

Ps 54:1-7

1 Save me, O God, by your name; vindicate me by your might. 2 Hear my prayer, O God; listen to the words of my mouth. 3 Strangers are attacking me; ruthless men seek my life--men without regard for God. Selah 4 Surely God is my help; the Lord is the one who sustains me. 5 Let evil recoil on those who slander me; in your faithfulness destroy them. 6 I will sacrifice a freewill offering to you; I will praise your name, O LORD, for it is good. 7 For he has delivered me from all my troubles, and my eyes have looked in triumph on my foes.

Eph 6:10-13

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. 11 Put on the full armor of God so that you can take your stand against the devil's schemes. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. 13 Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

When we consider who we are with all of our weaknesses and compare that to our goal of being just like Jesus, we come up really short. This assessment requires us to be absolutely honest with ourselves. Most of us see others worse than they really are, we see ourselves better than God sees us but we see self as being better than we are. Our goal is that we be just like Jesus in everything.

To admit that I have sinned terribly does not mean that I have committed murder or adultery or a big robbery. The sin that so easily entangles me may be gossip or greed or wanting to be like the world. It may be procrastination of doing good or a cold and uncaring heart. Sin is when we fail to live up to the glory of God.

The wonderful news is that we are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ who loves us and gave himself for us. Yes, we have sinned and still do sin but in Jesus we can go to bed each night with a clear conscience because his blood continues to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. We stand before him with all of the sin-stains washed clean, with new robes of righteousness, white as the new snow.

Hallelujah! What a Savior! It is with great boldness I come to the throne of grace this morning to petition the God of gods and Lord of lords. Lord increase my faith so I will never doubt your goodness or your ability to carry out your word. Even more, give me faith to obey you in all things, without excuses. I want to be like Jesus but I do fail at times so I need your constant forgiveness. Remind me of all the glories of heaven so I never lose my way. Be with our nation and our leaders so we can live peaceful lives. I humbly pray in the name of Jesus my Lord.
