Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:1-6

Ps 50:1-6

1 The Mighty one, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. 4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 "Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice." 6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. 2 Peter 3:10-13

10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything in it will be laid bare. 11 Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives 12 as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 13 But in keeping with his promise we are looking forward to a new heaven and a new earth, the home of righteousness.

What a day, glorious day that will be! O how we look forward to the day of the Lord when he comes to take his own to that home eternal. But we have work to do while we are here on earth. As our Lord said to his parents, we must be about our Father’s business. We must work while it is yet day. The business he was doing when he said this was studying and discussing the word of God. This is a business we need to be involved in as well as we learn his will for our lives.

God is in control. He sends the rain and the sunshine on the righteous and on the wicked alike. He blesses all mankind with life and many things to help us enjoy our lives. There is no excuse for anyone to reject him as God or Jesus as the Christ. Yet many ignore the evidence and turn away from the God who loves them.

Since Jesus is coming again and all will give an account of their lives to him, we must be busy about living for him and serving him. We need to share the gospel with those who are lost and encourage all those who are seeking to serve him.

Lord, open my eyes to the mission you have for me in my life. I realize it does not have to entail going to some foreign land or doing anything considered as “great” by other people. Help me begin by living in such a way that brings glory to your name in all I do and say. Make me the best husband I can possibly be. Use my teaching to lead others to you and to encourage those who are seeking you. Keep me from procrastinating in doing what needs to be done in all of these and other areas of my life. Forgive me when I fail. I pray in the name of Jesus.
