Daily Devotional: Psalms 35:1-10

Ps 35:1-10

1 Contend, O LORD, with those who contend with me; fight against those who fight against me. 2 Take up shield and buckler; arise and come to my aid. 3 Brandish spear and javelin against those who pursue me. Say to my soul, "I am your salvation." 4 May those who seek my life be disgraced and put to shame; may those who plot my ruin be turned back in dismay. 5 May they be like chaff before the wind, with the angel of the LORD driving them away; 6 may their path be dark and slippery, with the angel of the LORD pursuing them. 7 Since they hid their net for me without cause and without cause dug a pit for me, 8 may ruin overtake them by surprise--may the net they hid entangle them, may they fall into the pit, to their ruin. 9 Then my soul will rejoice in the LORD and delight in his salvation. 10 My whole being will exclaim, "Who is like you, O LORD? You rescue the poor from those too strong for them, the poor and needy from those who rob them."

Rom 15:13

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

David was going thorough a time in his life much like the last week of our Lord before he was put to death. On Sunday he had come into Jerusalem riding on a donkey and welcomed as the Messiah, the King of Israel. The crowds were all cheering and praising God for him. Before the week was over, the same crowd of people were chanting “crucify him, crucify him” and wanted nothing to do with him. How easily they were swayed and how quickly they had changed!

David was king of Israel in its glory. He was the beloved one in the nation and all were quick to follow him and extol his virtues. Yet, on several occasions, when he was being attacked or maligned, the masses of people turned against him, the one who had been their hero. The ones who revered him wanted to kill him!

Life has a way of changing circumstances. We like David and like our Lord must put our trust in God to deliver us, no matter what we face and no matter who may be against us. If God is for us, who can be against us? We are more than conquerors in Jesus Christ our Lord. We can do all things in Christ Jesus.

O Lord give me faith to trust you, no matter what I face and no matter who may be with me or who may be against me. With Jesus as my friend, I know I am sufficient in all things and in every way. Deliver me from the evil one and from every temptation I face in life. Help me live my life in such a way that others will see Jesus living in me and want to follow you in Him also. Give your strength to those who serve you, even though being persecuted. I pray in Jesus name.
