Daily Devotional: Psalms 27:1-6

Ps 27:1-6

1 The LORD is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. 4 one thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.

1 Peter 1:6-9

6 In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your faith-of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire-may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.

David put God first in his life. He enjoyed his life and had fun along the way but he also was a serious warrior and king. His psalms are filled with joy and praise but many are also songs decrying his plight in life and all the perils he faced. His focus was on God and on serving God. He considered the Law of God to be joy because he could see the benefits of faithfully obeying it. He longed to please the Lord.

While he saw the benefits of serving God and keeping his commands, he was not doing it from selfish motives. He recognized God as creator and giver of life – his own life. He knew it was God who made him what he was and sustained him every step of the way. He trusted God to deliver him from his enemies and to lead him along the path of life each day. So he praised God with music and song.

Heavenly Father I am thankful for your care in my life. You have made me all I am and so I ask you to help me use all I have to your glory. Forgive me for not using all of my potential, in both ability and opportunities. Help me to be more useful in your service from this day forward. Be with your people, especially those who are in places that do not enjoy the freedoms I have in this country. Give them your strength to be faithful and your protection against harm. Help me not allow the affluence of this nation detract me from serving you. I pray in Jesus name.
