Daily Devotional: Psalms 11:1-3

Ps. 11:1-3

1 In the LORD I take refuge. How then can you say to me: "Flee like a bird to your mountain. 2 For look, the wicked bend their bows; they set their arrows against the strings to shoot from the shadows at the upright in heart. 3 When the foundations are being destroyed, what can the righteous do?"

2 Peter 2:4-10a

4 For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly; 7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)- 9 if this is so, then the Lord knows how to rescue godly men from trials and to hold the unrighteous for the day of judgment, while continuing their punishment.   10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desires of the flesh and despise authority.

How can we as mere mortals understand the God who made us? God is infinite in every way and in everything. We are so limited time, in space and in matter. We (at our most brilliant) are totally ignorant in comparison to him. The greatest wisdom of mankind is foolishness to the God who spoke all things into existence.

God is just. It is his nature that sin must be punished and that he cannot tolerate or excuse any form of evil, wickedness or dishonesty. Jesus is the personification and revelation of truth to the world while Satan is the father of all lies. The wages of sin is death but the free gift of God is eternal life in Jesus Christ our Lord.

But God is love and is filled with compassion and mercy for his creation. He has made it possible for us to have our sins forgiven and be counted righteous so we can live with him in eternity. As his special people, he hears our cry and will not allow us to be tempted beyond our ability to overcome as he provides a way out.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your love for me and for all of mankind. Use me to do your will. Give me wisdom to know how to use and to be used to bring honor to your holy name. Forgive me when I fail to be all you want me to be. I thank you for the material things you have given me to enjoy but I ask you to not let me ever put my trust in things or my love into this world. Be with the leaders of our country and give them wisdom. I pray in the name of Jesus my King.
