Daily Devotional: Psalms 150:1-6

Ps 150:1-6

1 Praise the LORD. Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heavens. 2 Praise him for his acts of power; praise him for his surpassing greatness. 3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet, praise him with the harp and lyre, 4 praise him with tambourine and dancing, praise him with the strings and flute, 5 praise him with the clash of cymbals, praise him with resounding cymbals. 6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD. Praise the LORD.

Matt 22:37-40

37 Jesus replied: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.'   38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'   40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

It is fitting that as we come to the end of the book of Psalms, we end in praise to the Lord our God. In most of David’s life, his heart was fully devoted to God. Later his son Solomon was rebuked because he did not “follow the Lord with all his heart as his father David had done.” We have seen the love, the mercy and the great compassion of God extolled in these Psalms. We have heard of God the creator, his great power, his unspeakable majesty and his infinite wisdom. He alone is God, above all other gods, kings and nations. Praise the Lord!

As we seek to be like God, we realize that God is love. His love for all of mankind is beyond our finite minds to grasp. His love is constant, without waver, because it is based on his nature and not on our actions or behavior. Our response to him and to his love does not alter who he is. We learn love and how to love as we come to know him and his love for us. His great love was demonstrated when he gave his Son to die for our sin so we can live with him in eternity. Praise the Lord!

As we learn to love him and his love is perfected in us, we learn to trust him more and more. Based on his love and his grace we have the assurance of eternal life while fear of death and punishment are taken away. As we love God with all our heart, soul and mind, we allow that love to overflow to all those around us. We then learn to extend grace and forgiveness to others as God has done for us.

Heavenly Father praise your holy and matchless name! Your name is above all names, both in heaven and on earth. Thank you for Jesus your Son who died for my sin so I can live with you forever. Fill me with your Spirit so I will overflow with your love and then show your compassion, your mercy and your forgiveness to all those in my life. Help me live in such a way that others will see Jesus living in me in all I do and say. Continue to forgive me when I fail to live up to your glory. Bless those who are sick and hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus.
