Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:113-120

Ps 119:113-120                  Samekh

113 I hate double-minded men, but I love your law. 114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. 115 Away from me, you evildoers, that I may keep the commands of my God! 116 Sustain me according to your promise, and I will live; do not let my hopes be dashed. 117 Uphold me, and I will be delivered; I will always have regard for your decrees. 118 You reject all who stray from your decrees, for their deceitfulness is in vain. 119 All the wicked of the earth you discard like dross; therefore I love your statutes. 120 My flesh trembles in fear of you; I stand in awe of your laws.

Rom 15:4-6

4 For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through endurance and the encouragement of the Scriptures we might have hope. 5 May the God who gives endurance and encouragement give you a spirit of unity among yourselves as you follow Christ Jesus, 6 so that with one heart and mouth you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Paul says in chapter eight of Romans that we are saved by the hope we have in Jesus Christ. Hope saves because it keeps us going in spite of all the troubles we face in this life. Hope saves because it keeps us focused on the things above and on Jesus who is at the right hand of the Father. Hope saves us because we know that what God has in store for us far exceeds all the trials we face here.

As we study the word of God, we see that God has always promised to take care of his own. At times he made promises that were carried out in a very short time period and the results seen quickly. At other times he made promises that were not fulfilled until several hundred years later. But his word is always true and his promises never fail. Our hope is based on his promises that are always sure.

As we study scripture and we learn of the goodness of God we find more reasons to glorify him. It is not just what he has done for us but what he has always done for those who trust him. Living for him brings us joy and honors his name. The more we devote ourselves to him, the more we become aware of his presence in our daily lives. In him we find peace, even while living in a world of sin and strife.

Heavenly Father I am so thankful for your wonderful love. I stand in awe at your majesty, your wisdom and your constant veracity. As I look back over my life, I can see so many times you have rescued me from the problems, trials and even my own bad choices. Thank you for so many wonderful people you have made a part of my life who have helped me live for you and who have brought so much joy to me. Use me to help others. Give me wisdom to live for you and to teach your word with love, patience and compassion. I pray in the name of Jesus.
