Daily Devotional: Psalms 92:9-15

Ps. 92:9-15

9 For surely your enemies, O LORD, surely your enemies will perish; all evildoers will be scattered. 10 You have exalted my horn like that of a wild ox; fine oils have been poured upon me. 11 My eyes have seen the defeat of my adversaries; my ears have heard the rout of my wicked foes. 12 The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon; 13 planted in the house of the LORD, they will flourish in the courts of our God. 14 They will still bear fruit in old age, they will stay fresh and green, 15 proclaiming, "The LORD is upright; he is my Rock, and there is no wickedness in him."

1 Peter 2:4-5

4 As you come to him, the living Stone-rejected by men but chosen by God and precious to him- 5 you also, like living stones, are being built into a spiritual house to be a holy priesthood, offering spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.

In the days of hand to hand combat, a huge solid rock was a place of safety and a shield behind which to hide. In rugged terrain, a rock was a place of safety from a storm or the elements. No matter how many times one might pass that way, the same rock would still be there and could be depended on again and again.

Jesus is our Rock. No matter what we face in our spiritual battles, Jesus provides the safety we need and a resting place from which to do battle. He is our refuge from the storms of life and will always be there for us to find his shelter. He is the same Rock today that he will be tomorrow. He is also the foundation Rock in his spiritual house, the church. We, as living stones, are being built upon him to be the temple of God, indwelled by the Holy Spirit. To God be the glory!

Since Jesus is our Rock and we are his stones, why do we have such struggles in our lives? Why do bad things happen to us and those we love? How can Satan get us to do things we know we should not do? Why do we let opportunities to do good pass us by? Spiritual growth can be slow but each day we learn to trust him more and in so doing, we realize we are moving in the right direction. We will never “arrive” here in this life but we are getting ready for eternity with him.

O Lord God, giver of life and lover of mankind, I am so thankful that I can depend on you and on Jesus to be my Rock. What a blessing to know that when I face temptations, I can look to you for protection and strength to overcome. When I face the storms of life, you are my refuge and shelter. I pray for your healing on those who are faced with cancer. I realize that healing is not always in your will, so I ask you to give them strength and peace as they deal with life and death. Thank you for the good reports that some have received. I pray in Jesus name.
