Daily Devotional: Psalms 89:34-37

Ps. 89:34-37

34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. 35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness--and I will not lie to David--36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; 37 it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah

Acts 13:34-38

34 The fact that God raised him [Jesus] from the dead, never to decay, is stated in these words: "'I will give you the holy and sure blessings promised to David.' 35 So it is stated elsewhere: "'You will not let your Holy one see decay.' 36 "For when David had served God's purpose in his own generation, he fell asleep; he was buried with his fathers and his body decayed. 37 But the one whom God raised from the dead did not see decay. 38 "Therefore, my brothers, I want you to know that through Jesus the forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you.

Jesus is our King and he both lives and reigns forever. He is on the throne David until he turns the kingdom back over to God the Father. While many are still looking for Jesus to set up an earthly kingdom, it will not happen. He said that his kingdom was not of this world, meaning it is a spiritual kingdom. On another occasion, he told his listeners that the kingdom would come before some of the ones in his audience would die. His kingdom is his church, the family of God.

Paul said that we have been translated (a complete change) from the kingdom of Satan into the marvelous kingdom of God’s dear Son. As citizens of his kingdom we are to follow his will for us. Obedience is not legalism. We are not trying to earn anything by following his word; we are showing our faith and gratitude to him because he has saved us. By his blood Jesus has set us free.

We enjoy many freedoms in this nation but that does not mean we don’t have to follow the laws of the land. In Christ we have freedom from the bondage of sin so we can live for him. The more we willingly serve him, the more we find peace and joy in our lives. Sin not only yields death but brings all kinds of troubles on us in this life. Many of these problems can be avoided as we live for Jesus. Our lives are based on love for God and then showing his love to others around us.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for the freedoms I enjoy in this great nation but even more thankful for the freedoms in Jesus Christ. Give me greater faith and a pure heart so that serving you is always a joy. Help me keep my eyes on the things above and things eternal so I don’t get distracted by the pleasures of this world. Use me to lead others to Jesus and to encourage those who are already serving you. I thank you for so many in your family who encourage me every day. Be with those who are sick and suffering. I pray in the name of Jesus.
