Daily Devotional: Psalms 20:6-9

Ps 20:6-9

6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. 7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God. 8 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. 9 O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!

1 Tim 2:1-4

1 I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone- 2 for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. 3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth.

Without any regard to our political persuasion or even without regard for the country where we live, we are told to pray for those in authority. When a nation of people respects the Lord and his will, he will bless them. When they do not, he will ultimately punish or even destroy them. It is not the wisdom of the national leaders or the size of the army that makes a nation great but rather, it is when God blesses them and sustains them. This is true for the smallest nation in the world, the largest and all of those in between. God is in control.

We are to pray for wisdom for our leaders; remembering that the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom. We are to submit to them by obeying the laws of the land. We are to show them respect whether we agree with them or not. This is true because it is God who put them in power for his own purposes.

We are to pray for peace. Peace comes from attitudes toward each other. We are told to be at peace with all men – as much as it depends on us. We need peace in our homes, in our schools, in our churches and in our country. Peace comes from our recognition that God is in control. Peace comes from a willingness to show respect to others, even those with whom we disagree. Peace is often the result of not demanding our “rights” but instead, showing a loving and giving spirit.

Heavenly Father, you know the true state of our union, of our churches and of our homes so we ask your guidance and your blessings on us. Lead us in your wisdom in the way you want us to go. I ask that the leaders of our country and those of other nations will look to you for your help and your wisdom so that we will have peace and harmony. Help me be perfected in your love, to trust you with all my being so I will be what you want me to be. Forgive me when I fail. While I know that I cannot change the world, help me change the hearts of those around me to want to follow you and live for you. I pray in the name of Jesus.
