Daily Devotional: Psalms 144:1-4

Ps 144:1-4

1 Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. 2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. 3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him? 4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow.

1 Cor 12:4-6

4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit. 5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. 6 There are different kinds of working, but the same God works all of them in all men.

I met a man one day and as we were talking, I asked him what he did for a living and he said he sold fire trucks. For some reason that really hit me. I had never even thought about anyone selling fire trucks but then upon reflection, I knew it had to be done by somebody. There are lots of different jobs in the world and there is a place for everyone to use the abilities they have been given.

The same God who gave Paul the ability to preach the gospel gave David the skill to be a great general and soldier. He is the same one who gives each of us the abilities we have to do the work he has given us to do. Some are rocket scientist and some are studio recorders while others are school administrators. One lady I know is a pipe fitter and another is a beautician and another is an attorney. I am thankful there are doctors and nurses because those are things I could never do with my temperament. (I never could stand the sight of needles or blood!)

It is God who gives each their specific abilities and each is responsible to him to use them in a way that brings glory to him. Paul says the church is the body of Christ and each member of the body is unique and has special work to do but each is necessary for the whole to accomplish what God intends.

So whatever our gender, our race, our social standing or any other difference, we have our place in the plan of God and each is uniquely important to the work that God has planned for us to do. None is more important than being godly parents and grandparents, which means being good husbands and wives in our homes.

O Lord God, give me a heart of service to you but help me realize that serving you means serving others around me. Give me wisdom to know what you have made me to do and use me to do it. Help me realize that as your child I am important to you. I thank you for all those who do so much that I cannot do but don’t let me make excuses for not doing what I can do. Help me be willing to give up self and to make your will my own in every part of my life. Thank you for giving Jesus to die for my sin so I can live with you in eternity. I humbly pray in his name.
