Daily Devotional: Psalms 136:1-9

Ps 136:1-9

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. 4 to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. 5 who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever. 6 who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever. 7 who made the great lights--His love endures forever. 8 the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever. 9 the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.

John 1:1-5,

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it.

I do not claim to understand God but I trust that he has revealed himself to us in his word. We see evidence of him in his creation all around us but it is only in his revelation that we can come to know him and his will for our lives. We will never be able to appreciate him as God until we accept his account of creation – and accept it at face value as it is written. God created all that we know and he did so by his word in six days. He spoke it into existence and it came from nothing.

His power, his majesty, his wisdom and his authority over us along with the right to hold us accountable depend on the creation. But also, his care for us and his knowing what is best for us depends on the fact that he made us. Add to this that he made us in his own image and after his likeness and we see that humanity is special in his sight – above all other creation. His love endures forever.

It is in our recognition of God as God and as our maker that we offer thanks to him for all we have and all we are in this life. We submit our will to his will and we put our faith in Jesus as his Son, as our Savior and as our Lord. The plan of God for our eternal life was in his mind before creation began. His love endures forever.

O Lord God, creator of heaven and earth, giver and sustainer of life, I come to you today giving you thanks for all you have done for me in my life and all you do for me every hour of every day. There is so much about you as one God but as three beings I do not and cannot understand but I trust you and your word so I believe without doubt. Give me wisdom to understand all you want me to understand and faith to accept the rest you have revealed to me in your word. Help me love others as you love me. Use me in your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
