Daily Devotional: Psalms 119:137-144

Ps 119:137-144       Tsadhe

137 Righteous are you, O LORD, and your laws are right. 138 The statutes you have laid down are righteous; they are fully trustworthy. 139 My zeal wears me out, for my enemies ignore your words. 140 Your promises have been thoroughly tested, and your servant loves them. 141 Though I am lowly and despised, I do not forget your precepts. 142 Your righteousness is everlasting and your law is true. 143 Trouble and distress have come upon me, but your commands are my delight. 144 Your statutes are forever right; give me understanding that I may live.

Col 1:9

9 For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you and asking God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all spiritual wisdom and understanding.

God is right, he is fair and his word is always true. Our lack of understanding does not nullify the wisdom or veracity of his word. Our agreement or consent does not change the truth of God any more than a dog howling at the moon will change the moon. We need to pray for faith to accept his word and wisdom to understand it and strength to put it into practice in our everyday lives.

Wisdom is good because it is the ability to apply knowledge but asking for wisdom without knowledge is like trying to make an automobile run without and engine – it just will not work. The wise Preacher said that the beginning of wisdom is the fear of the Lord. Now we are back to where we started – God is right. The only way to get knowledge is to study the word of God. In doing so, we ask God to help us retain what we study, understand what it means and the wisdom to apply it in our lives. He has promised to give us all of this when we ask in faith.

As in the days of the Psalmist, there will be many around us who ignore God and his precepts. Some of these will ridicule us, some will ignore our plea to serve God and some may even persecute us in various ways but none of this should deter our determination to serve the Lord. When David faced trial, he turned to God and to his word. When we face trials, we must do the same.

O Lord God, I am thankful for your wonderful love. Thank you for giving us your inerrant word so we can know you and your Son. I ask a special prayer for those who are sick, for their caregivers and their families. Be with those who have lost loved ones recently and give them your comfort and your peace. I ask you to be with our nation. Take away the hatred, the bitterness and the strife and give us peace. Give our leaders your wisdom that they will turn to you for guidance and will follow your will. Thank you for all you do for me. I pray in Jesus name.
