Daily Devotional: Psalms 83:1-8

Ps 83:1-8

1 O God, do not keep silent; be not quiet, O God, be not still. 2 See how your enemies are astir, how your foes rear their heads. 3 With cunning they conspire against your people; they plot against those you cherish. 4 “Come,” they say, “let us destroy them as a nation, that the name of Israel be remembered no more.” 5 With one mind they plot together; they form an alliance against you--6 the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, of Moab and the Hagrites, 7 Gebal, Ammon and Amalek, Philistia, with the people of Tyre. 8 Even Assyria has joined them to lend strength to the descendants of Lot. Col 2:6-10

6 So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in him, 7 rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness. 8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

For the psalmist, it seemed as though the whole world had conspired and was against him and his people. Even those who were normally enemies against each other had joined forces to destroy them. His only hope is God.

During the days of Jesus the entire religious and political establishment joined forces to destroy him. The Pharisees were the extreme right with the Sadducees being the left wing party. Throw in the Herodians and you have the spectrum but they were as one against Jesus. He was the victor because he is God.

Today when we try to do right and stand for the truth, we will be opposed by all sides of thinking. Since all who oppose truth belong to Satan and follow his ways, it is no wonder they can join forces to fight against God and his will. But God is still in control. Jesus is king over the earth with all authority over heaven and earth. So as his people, we trust in God and his Son and we are the victors. In Jesus we are promised eternal life with God in heaven.

Heavenly Father, I am so thankful for your love for me. Thank you for the health I enjoy and I ask you to help me take care of myself physically. Even more than this, I am thankful for the spiritual opportunities you have given me in Jesus and ask you to help me exercise in godliness and fill my heart with your living bread. Use me in your service to teach, to encourage and to help others. Give me wisdom and strength to live in my own life what I teach. Be with our nation and our leaders and use us as a force for good. I pray in the name of Jesus.
