Daily Devotional: Psalms 65:5-8

Ps 65:5-8

5 You answer us with awesome deeds of righteousness, O God our Savior, the hope of all the ends of the earth and of the farthest seas, 6 who formed the mountains by your power, having armed yourself with strength, 7 who stilled the roaring of the seas, the roaring of their waves, and the turmoil of the nations. 8 Those living far away fear your wonders; where morning dawns and evening fades you call forth songs of joy.

Acts 17:29-31

29 “Therefore since we are God's offspring, we should not think that the divine being is like gold or silver or stone-an image made by man's design and skill. 30 In the past God overlooked such ignorance, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent. 31 For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.”

In the culture of modern day America, many expect the right to be selfish in every way and greed is extolled as a virtue. This leads many to feel entitled to having things their way; even at the expense of taking away the rights of those who might get in their way. This also strips many of their feelings of responsibility for their own welfare and even their actions toward society.

This is the exact opposite of a true recognition of God as revealed in the Bible. He is a loving God, a compassionate and merciful God. He offers all mankind eternal salvation by his grace because none of us could ever earn it. He is also a God of supreme justice and has promised that those who do not revere him, honor him, trust him and obey him will be lost in hell, away from his everlasting presence.

As creator of all things and as God of the universe, he has the absolute right to demand that we serve him. It is only right that we submit to his Son, Jesus, as Lord. This means he tells us how to live our lives to please him. He owes us nothing but offers to freely give us all things in Jesus Christ. So we serve him from a heart of love and do so gladly. We praise him for his greatness but also for his love. We find peace in knowing Jesus as the Son of God and as our Savior.

Heavenly Father, thank you for your love and for providing a way of salvation for all who are willing to submit to you and to your Son. It is such an honor to be loved by you and to be called yours, to be a child in your family and to be a citizen of your kingdom. Open my heart to your Spirit as I allow him to make me more like you each day. Give me a greater desire to know your word and a commitment to study more. Give me wisdom to understand it and strength to practice it in my life. Use me in your will to help others. I pray in the name of Jesus.
