Daily Devotional: Psalms 62:7-12

Ps 62:7-12

7 My salvation and my honor depend on God; he is my mighty rock, my refuge. 8 Trust in him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Selah 9 Lowborn men are but a breath, the highborn are but a lie; if weighed on a balance, they are nothing; together they are only a breath. 10 Do not trust in extortion or take pride in stolen goods; though your riches increase, do not set your heart on them. 11 one thing God has spoken, two things have I heard: that you, O God, are strong, 12 and that you, O Lord, are loving. Surely you will reward each person according to what he has done.

1 Corinthians 15:9-10

9 For I am the least of the apostles and do not even deserve to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. 10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace to me was not without effect. No, I worked harder than all of them-yet not I, but the grace of God that was with me.

There is so much in life that we cannot understand. Questions can be raised that cannot be answered. But one thing for sure, we had no say about when we would be born, where it would occur or who our parents might be. It is by the grace of God and by his grace alone that we have been given the opportunities in our lives. It is by his grace that we have our level of intelligence, along with opportunities to use what has been given to us. It is his mercy that has blessed us with the physical health that we have enjoyed. By the grace of God I am what I am.

But we are expected to use what God has given us and make the most of the opportunities that have been placed in our lives. We are not and will not be measured by what God has given us but rather by what we do with it and how we use it to his glory. The same things are expected of us by God whether we are born into a famous family with wealth and power or we are born to paupers in some remote country – “we are to fear God and keep his commandments.”

Our earthly position, our wealth or education does not impress God. What does impress him is a heart that is set on doing his will and a life that reflects his glory and his holiness. To these he will give eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

O Lord God in heaven above, I am so thankful for your wisdom and your love shown to me in more ways than I can even know. Thank you for providing a way of salvation in Jesus your Son. Thank you for the parents you gave me and their determination to teach me your way. Thank you for the many friends you have put in my life over the years that have been such an encouragement to me. Help me honor you and your name in all I do. Forgive me when I fail to live up to your infinite glory. Use me in your will. I pray in the name of Jesus.
