Daily Devotional: Psalms 60:1-5

Ps 60:1-5

1 You have rejected us, O God, and burst forth upon us; you have been angry--now restore us! 2 You have shaken the land and torn it open; mend its fractures, for it is quaking. 3 You have shown your people desperate times; you have given us wine that makes us stagger. 4 But for those who fear you, you have raised a banner to be unfurled against the bow. Selah 5 Save us and help us with your right hand that those you love may be delivered.

1 Corinthians 10:1-6

1 For I do not want you to be ignorant of the fact, brothers, that our forefathers were all under the cloud and that they all passed through the sea. 2 They were all baptized into Moses in the cloud and in the sea. 3 They all ate the same spiritual food 4 and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ. 5 Nevertheless, God was not pleased with most of them; their bodies were scattered over the desert. 6 Now these things occurred as examples to keep us from setting our hearts on evil things as they did.

Each of the children of Israel had the same commands, the same promises and the same warnings from God. Moses led them all across the Red Sea and every one of them drank water from the rock. They all ate the manna that God rained down from heaven and the quail he sent upon the camp. Yet, some of them remained faithful to God and some of them rebelled. It was not the fault of God or his messenger-servant Moses that the latter did so.

They complained about the food and their conditions in the wilderness. They grumbled when the water was not readily available. They even turned against God, made a calf of gold and worshipped it as the god who brought them out of Egypt. They wanted a new leader and some of them formed a coup against Moses and Aaron. God punished them in many ways for their rebellion, their unbelief and their grumbling. This all happened as examples for our learning.

What we learn is that we are to trust God. This means we depend on him in all things and we obey his word – whether we like it or not and when we understand why he said what he said but also when we don’t understand it. God is God!

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for revealing to me your will in the Bible. I also thank you for showing me by examples (both good and bad) how you deal with mankind and your nature of majesty, holiness, absolute righteousness and love. Open my mind to learn from the actions of others so I can be faithful and true to you in my own life. Forgive me when I fail. Help me be more like you and your Son every day. I pray in his wonderful name as my Lord.
