Daily Devotional: Psalms 52:1-5

Ps 52:1-5

1 Why do you boast of evil, you mighty man? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God? 2 Your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor, you who practice deceit. 3 You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. Selah 4 You love every harmful word, O you deceitful tongue! 5 Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and tear you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. 1 Peter 3:10-12

10 For, “Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 11 He must turn from evil and do good; he must seek peace and pursue it. 12 For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer, but the face of the Lord is against those who do evil.”

There is a sense in which God gives his blessing to all mankind. Jesus said the rain falls on the just and the unjust. We know the sun shines on saints and sinners alike. In fact, there are times that very wicked and very evil people prosper, even beyond that of the righteous. For many, this is a sign that either God does not exist at all or that he is not concerned about us and how we live. In reality, it is only an indication of the great love, mercy and patience of God who gives all mankind more opportunities to turn to him than anyone deserves.

But for the most part, we can’t do anything about most others in the world. We can control ourselves, our hearts and our actions. We can control our attitudes and show others the love of God and the moral purity he desires. Instead of speaking evil toward others, we can speak the truth in a loving way. We can show the forgiveness of God to those who wrong us. We can seek to be at peace with all men instead of isolating ourselves in bitterness.

God is the final judge of all men. In his time and in his own way he will execute judgment that is fair, right and appropriate in every case. So our job (my job) in life is to let God do the judging and just show others Jesus living in me.

Heavenly Father, holy is your name in all the earth. Even though there are many who do not reverence you or show you respect, that does not change the fact that you are the only true and living God. Instill in me a constant reminder to live in a way that shows supreme respect and honor to you and your name. Help me seek peace with others and to be patient and forgiving toward them when they oppose me or they are not what you want them to be. Please give your healing and blessings on those who are sick and hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus.
