Daily Devotional: Psalms 51:10-14

Ps 51:10-14

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me. 11 Do not cast me from your presence or take your Holy Spirit from me. 12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me. 13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways, and sinners will turn back to you. 14 Save me from bloodguilt, O God, the God who saves me, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

Rom 7:21-25a

21 So I find this law at work: When I want to do good, evil is right there with me. 22 For in my inner being I delight in God's law; 23 but I see another law at work in the members of my body, waging war against the law of my mind and making me a prisoner of the law of sin at work within my members. 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? 25 Thanks be to God-through Jesus Christ our Lord!

Did David know that it was wrong for him to commit adultery with Bathsheeba before he did it? Did he know hiding his sin after he had done it was wrong? Are we to suppose that David did not know that having Uriah killed was sin? David knew all of these were wrong and were sin against God. But in his weakness as a person, he somehow convinced himself, one small step at a time that he really was ok with God and his mistakes were not too bad.

It is strange how we can see these glaring contradictions in the lives of others but they seem to not be so obvious in our own! So we go on day after day doing things that we really know deep down are wrong but convince ourselves that we are still ok with God. Satan is a master deceiver and knows just what kind of false reasoning to use to make us believe a lie.

But David recognized his sin, admitted it and repented. God forgave him but he still had to suffer some consequences because of it. It was this forgiveness that gave him the joy of salvation once again so he could sing praises to God. We can accept God’s forgiveness when we recognize, admit and repent of sin in our lives and God will give us strength to overcome and fill our heart with his joy.

O Lord, our Lord, God of heaven and earth, in you I live and move and have my very being. It is your Son who died for my sin and so I commit daily my life to him and to you. I know that I fail to live up to all you want me to be and I ask for you to create in me a pure heart every day and help me be stronger to overcome every sin in my life. Forgive me when I fail. Use me to your glory and to the good of others around me. Thank you for your love. I pray in the name of Jesus.
