Daily Devotional: Psalms 50:1-6

Ps 50:1-6

1 The Mighty one, God, the LORD, speaks and summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets. 2 From Zion, perfect in beauty, God shines forth. 3 Our God comes and will not be silent; a fire devours before him, and around him a tempest rages. 4 He summons the heavens above, and the earth, that he may judge his people: 5 “Gather to me my consecrated ones, who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.” 6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness, for God himself is judge. Rom 1:21-25

21 For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools 23 and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. 24 Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. 25 They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator-who is forever praised. Amen.

God! The very word carries with it the idea that there is one who is above us, is more powerful than us and in some way controls what goes on in our lives. Those of all the ages and of every culture have worshipped some kind of god. Even today in our country where so many deny the existence of God, everyone does worship some god, whether it be humanism, materialism, intellectualism, nature or something else, all have their gods.

The world around us declares the reality of the God who created it all. The more men try to explain away God, the more ridiculous they become in their reasoning and thinking. “They claim to be wise but have become fools.”

The motive behind denying God is the reality that if indeed he is God, he is judge and therefore we are all accountable to him. The sad truth is that our denial of him and his majesty does not remove the reality of him and truth. The only real explanation of the purpose of life is given in his word, the Bible.

Heavenly Father, thank you for making yourself known to mankind. When I consider your majesty, your glory and your absolute perfection and then look at myself, I am ashamed and know that I have no innate right to approach you. But you have given me that right by forgiving all my sin by the sacrifice and blood of your Son and my Savior, Jesus Christ. Thank you for making him known to me and thank you for counting me righteous in him. Help me use your grace as motivation to live for you and become more like Jesus every day. In his name I pray.
