Daily Devotional: Psalms 47:6-9

Ps 47:6-9

6 Sing praises to God, sing praises; sing praises to our King, sing praises. 7 For God is the King of all the earth; sing to him a psalm of praise. 8 God reigns over the nations; God is seated on his holy throne. 9 The nobles of the nations assemble as the people of the God of Abraham, for the kings of the earth belong to God; he is greatly exalted.

Rom 14:10-12

10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your brother? For we will all stand before God's judgment seat. 11 It is written: "'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.'" 12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God.

Each morning there is a group who gets together in the neighborhood store, a local restaurant or some other place to have coffee and solve all of the world’s problems. They can find the answers for everything from why their favorite team lost the game to what the world leaders did wrong the last few days. While this is said in jest and we know that these groups do not solve anything in reality, they only discuss and give opinions. Sometimes it gets heated as individual views are expressed and participants differ on what should be done.

The sad truth is that far too many people spend their time worrying over things that they can do nothing about or is really none of their business. So we see some who are always trying to tell others how to live their lives or who seem to have an opinion about every action of those around them. We are instructed to not be busybodies and gossip is a sin. This leads us to two things we need to know.

We are each responsible for our own actions. Each of us must choose to either serve God or live without him and then accept the eternal consequences. While we are told to teach others, warn against sin, encourage to do right, we cannot be accountable for their decisions and choices. Also, we often don’t really know all the details about why others do what they do. Another thing is that God is in control. God is the final judge. This means each of us can put our energies into our own lives to be what God wants us to be and leave others alone.

O God of all the living, I praise you for your unfathomable wisdom, your mighty power, your endless love and your matchless grace. Help me devote my time and energies to making my life what you want me to be. Keep me from worry, gossip and being a busybody. Help me be merciful and forgiving toward others as you are merciful and forgiving to me. As I see the wickedness of the world around me, help me become more devoted to you each day. Use me to help others with what you have given me and to give you the glory. I pray in the name of Jesus.
