Daily Devotional: Psalms 45:1-5

Ps 45:1-5

1 My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. 2 You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. 4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds. 5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king's enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet.

1 John 3:1-3

1 How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. 3 Everyone who has this hope in him purifies himself, just as he is pure.

God had plans for David, even when he was a shepherd boy, the youngest of his father’s house. His older brothers seemed to be better suited to be king by their size and their looks but God said he looked on the heart and not on the outward appearance. For several years after David was anointed as the next king of Israel, it seemed that God was not ever going to keep his word. He had killed the hero giant of the enemy single handedly. He had then become a trusted warrior and leader in the army and was having major victories.

But still Saul remained as king and because he was jealous, he was seeking to kill David. David was forced to flee and hide in foreign cities and in caves in the mountains of Israel. He was not a king but a fugitive. Where was God and the promises he had made? Why was all this coming on him? Through it all, David never doubted God or forced his way. He trusted God to keep his word.

We may not see what God has in store for us and our lives but when we trust him, he will use us in his way, in his time and for his purpose. We are the children of God and that is greater than being king of any nation on earth!

O God, thank you for your love for me. Fill me with your Spirit so your love and your kindness will overflow in my life to those around me. Forgive me when I am impatient, unkind and say things that should not be said. Give me self-control and wisdom to say only that which needs to be said and to say it in the right way. Give me your joy and your peace and help me show it to all the world.  Bless others who are hurting and use me to help them. I pray in the name of Jesus.
