Daily Devotional: Psalms 43:1-5

Ps 43:1-5

1 Vindicate me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation; rescue me from deceitful and wicked men. 2 You are God my stronghold. Why have you rejected me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy? 3 Send forth your light and your truth, let them guide me; let them bring me to your holy mountain, to the place where you dwell. 4 Then will I go to the altar of God, to God, my joy and my delight. I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God. 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

Rom 8:16-17

16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs-heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

Imagine for a moment (if you can) that you are the king over the largest and most powerful nation in the world with the knowledge that the God of heaven has put you there and all you do is for him. Every action that is taken is a reflection on God, on his power and his majesty. Even the smallest battle you fight is directed by the ruler of the universe. And should you lose a battle, surely it is a reflection of your own (or that of your nation) failure to live according to his will. This would give you some strong assurance along with a tremendous responsibility.

While we are not kings over a physical nation, we are children of the Most High God and King Jesus is our family. Does this not mean that all we do or say is a reflection on him? Do we not have the same assurance that God is with us and is fighting our daily battles in life? Yes, we have God and Christ living in us as the Spirit indwells our hearts, our minds and our lives. In our times of trials and troubles the Spirit goes before the Father on our behalf and speaks for us. The Son ever intercedes for us as well. This actually puts us in a more enviable place than was King David! While we may not win every battle we face in life, we have been assured that Jesus has already won the war against our enemy and that victory is ours as long as we are faithful to him.

O God, my heavenly Father, I thank you for your tremendous love shown to me in the giving of Jesus your Son on my behalf. I know you have forgiven me of all my sin and continue to forgive me as I walk in your light. I praise you for this. Thank you for giving me so many others in my life who love you and serve you and thus give me constant encouragement. Thank you for this country in which I live. Help me always show respect for those in authority and I ask your guidance over them as they rule and make decisions. I pray in the name of Jesus.
