Daily Devotional: Psalms 136:1-9

Ps 136:1-9

1 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good. His love endures forever. 2 Give thanks to the God of gods. His love endures forever. 3 Give thanks to the Lord of lords: His love endures forever. 4 to him who alone does great wonders, His love endures forever. 5 who by his understanding made the heavens, His love endures forever. 6 who spread out the earth upon the waters, His love endures forever. 7 who made the great lights--His love endures forever. 8 the sun to govern the day, His love endures forever. 9 the moon and stars to govern the night; His love endures forever.

Last week as I stood on the balcony of the condo at the beach, we watched the waves coming in from the angry sea. The storms that flooded Texas had come into the Gulf Coast panhandle and had pounded the area with rain and very high winds. The waves were extremely high (I don’t surf but it would have been a good opportunity for someone who did) and the wind was blowing hard.

I remarked to the others there with me how this showed the power of God but at the same time showed his care and love for us. The wind was strong and the surf was high but the waves only came so far and then returned to the sea from which they had come. Even though one would come a few feet more than the next or the one before it, they all stayed within the boundaries God had set. God is in control and his love abounds toward us.

I never cease to be amazed at the power of God. He spoke and created all that exists in our universe. I read this week that scientists are thinking they may have discovered other universes around us. If there are, then God has spoken and his power is even greater than we had previously imagined. Any God who can create all we know about with his word could certainly do even more! It is his same power that sustains and controls all he had made.

Just as mind boggling is that a God this powerful can actually care about us and love us so much he would make a way for us to live with him in eternity. His love endures forever because God is love. This is much more than just saying he has chosen to love us. God is love; it is his nature so his love endures forever.

O God of heaven and earth, creator of all things, I stand in awe at your mighty power and realize just how small I really am in your creation. I know I have failed so many times to live up to your glory, to your perfect standard and I know this makes you angry but at the same time evokes your compassion, your mercy and your grace to me. Thank you for showing your wisdom and giving me a way of salvation through Jesus your Son and my Lord. Use me to serve others and thus to serve you. Please continue to forgive me. I pray in the name of Jesus.
