Whose Side Am I On? - II Chronicles 15:1-4

Abraham Lincoln said: “Sir, my concern is not whether God is on our side; my greatest concern is to be on God's side, for God is always right.”

Too many times we try to put God on our side to justify what we want. Just think of all the various crusades that have claimed that God was on their side. In II Chronicles 15:1-4 we read of King Asa of Judah as he returned from battle against the Cushites. He had called on the name of the Lord and God had given him the victory. He is met by a prophet named Azariah.

1 The Spirit of God came upon Azariah son of Oded. 2 He went out to meet Asa and said to him, "Listen to me, Asa and all Judah and Benjamin. The LORD is with you when you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you. 3 For a long time Israel was without the true God, without a priest to teach and without the law. 4 But in their distress they turned to the LORD, the God of Israel, and sought him, and he was found by them.

Whose side am I on today? It is easy for me to claim that God is on my side. I convince myself that my thinking is right and so surely God must be pleased with me. But how can I know if I am trying to move God to my thinking or if I am moving to His side? Look again at verse 3. The only way for us to know if we have God on our side is if we “seek Him”. The only way for us to seek God is through His word, the Bible.

We must each accept the responsibility to study the Bible for ourselves. We must then put into practice the things we learn from this study. Just like God wanted to bless His people in Judah, He wants to bless His people today in Christ. Let’s each of us determine that we will “seek Him” today and we can know that “He will be found.” Then we can rest in His promise that He will never leave us or forsake us. May God bless each of us today as we seek Him and strive to be on His side.
