Thoughts on Psalm 8

by Robert Fudge

1 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth,
Who hast displayed Thy splendor above the heavens!

2 From the mouth of infants and nursing babes
Thou hast established strength, Because of Thine adversaries,
To make the enemy and the revengeful cease.

3 When I consider Thy heavens, the work of Thy fingers,
The moon and the stars, which Thou hast ordained;

4 What is man, that Thou dost take thought of him?
And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him?

5 Yet Thou hast made him a little lower than God,
And dost crown him with glory and majesty!

6 Thou dost make him to rule over the works of Thy hands;
Thou hast put all things under his feet,

7 All sheep and oxen,
And also the beasts of the field,

8 The birds of the heavens,
And the fish of the sea, Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

9 O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth!

The first thought that comes to mind when I read this Psalm is that we serve an AWESOME God! When we try to think of God and try to realize what Power it takes to create the entire universe, it boggles our minds. Try to think of the knowledge and wisdom to even conceive the idea of creating the universe. All the knowledge of man (think about the vast store of knowledge from discoveries of the ages) is just learning
a small part of what God already knew and set in motion by His word. Add to that the eternal nature of God and we begin to realize “How majestic is Your name in all the earth!”

Now read verse 4 from above: What is man, that Thou dost take thought of him? And the son of man, that Thou dost care for him? This majestic, awesome God knows who I am and who you are in our small
places on the earth. He knows my joys. He knows my sorrows. He knows my problems. He knows my temptations. He knows my trials, my pain, my sadness, my anxiety, He knows me! As the apostle Peter said in 1 Peter 5:7: “Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." It is for this reason that Paul told the Philippians to “rejoice in the Lord always and again I say rejoice.”

How wonderful that we can trust God to know and take care of our every need. Today as each of us goes our own way (and faces our own problems and temptations) let us determine to trust God. As His children we have His Spirit living in us. Let us claim the joy, peace and love that comes as the fruit of His Spirit in our hearts and lives.

May God bless you today with a special portion of His love.

O LORD, our Lord, How majestic is Thy name in all the earth!
