Ps 119:89-96 Lamedh
89 Your word, O LORD, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens. 90 Your faithfulness continues through all generations; you established the earth, and it endures. 91 Your laws endure to this day, for all things serve you. 92 If your law had not been my delight, I would have perished in my affliction. 93 I will never forget your precepts, for by them you have preserved my life. 94 Save me, for I am yours; I have sought out your precepts. 95 The wicked are waiting to destroy me, but I will ponder your statutes. 96 To all perfection I see a limit; but your commands are boundless.
Is the word of God my delight? This is a question each of us needs to ask ourselves and give an honest answer. We say that we delight in the word of God and we even convince ourselves this is true but the real test is not what we say but what we do. How much time do we spend reading, studying and meditating on God’s word? Do we spend more time reading the Bible than we do watching television? Do we spend more time in the word of God than we spend surfing the net? Do we spend more time in the sports pages or the Bible? Can we quote stats from our favorite team and each player on it better than we can quote scripture? Do we travel hundreds of miles to see our team play a ball game but would not consider taking an extra evening to go hear someone teach the word in a revival or special class? The fact is; we do what we delight in doing.
An elderly gentleman friend of mine (who is now deceased) who had only an elementary education was most often found reading his Bible. He would struggle with some of the words but that never deterred him from reading it. After he left this life I had the opportunity to look through his Bible and it was filled with handwritten notes. He had written in cross references, he had put in comments and he had even put in questions but it was obvious he enjoyed reading and studying the Bible. The law of God was his delight.
As with almost anything, the more we study the word the more we understand it. The more we understand it, the more we enjoy it. It is the revelation of the mind of God so there will be things that are difficult to grasp; some of which may not be fully comprehended until we are with him in heaven.
O God, give me a heart that yearns for your word. Increase my faith so I will want to know you more fully and give me wisdom to understand when I study your word. Give me the fortitude to put what I learn into practice so I will be more like you each day of my life. Fill me with your Spirit so I will comprehend spiritual truths and then strength to share these with others. Make my life a help to those who are struggling. I pray in the name of Jesus who died for me. Robert
