Thoughts on Psalm 1

by Robert Fudge

1 Blessed is the man
who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked
or stand in the way of sinners
or sit in the seat of mockers.
2 But his delight is in the law of the LORD,
and on his law he meditates day and night.

3 He is like a tree planted by streams of water,
which yields its fruit in season
and whose leaf does not wither.
Whatever he does prospers.

4 Not so the wicked!
They are like chaff
that the wind blows away.

5 Therefore the wicked will not stand in the judgment,
nor sinners in the assembly of the righteous.

6 For the LORD watches over the way of the righteous,
but the way of the wicked will perish. (NIV)

As I read this Psalm it would be easy for me to focus on what all is wrong with the “ungodly” and why it is that way. However, today I would like to focus on the righteous and the LORD. He watches over the righteous. That is, He is constantly there to take care of us and to protect us from all harm. As Paul put it, “be anxious for nothing”, “the LORD is near” and the “peace of God which transcends all comprehension will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”

But just who is the “righteous”? It is those who “delight in the law of the LORD”. It is those who “meditate on His law day and night”. In other words it is those who are willing to study God’s word on a regular basis and every decision of life is made based on God’s Word. It is then we can be “like a tree planted by streams of water” with the assurance that God is there providing our every need. It is then that we will be able to yield fruit in season.

Let’s each one, plant the seed of the word in our hearts and share that seed with those around us. It is then that God will provide the fruit of the Spirit in our lives and the fruit of souls brought to Him in the proper season.

May God bless us and keep us today.
