1 I will praise you, O LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonders. 2 I will be glad and rejoice in you; I will sing praise to your name, O Most High. 3 My enemies turn back; they stumble and perish before you. 4 For you have upheld my right and my cause; you have sat on your throne, judging righteously. 5 You have rebuked the nations and destroyed the wicked; you have blotted out their name for ever and ever. 6 Endless ruin has overtaken the enemy, you have uprooted their cities; even the memory of them has perished.
While today most of us don’t have the same kind of physical and political enemies trying to destroy us like the Psalmist, we still serve the same God who is our deliverer. The enemy of God is the same today as it was then. Satan is still doing all he can to destroy any who would serve God. He may use direct conflict or he may use more subtle methods but he is still the enemy. He is pictured as walking about as a roaring lion just looking for someone to devour but he is also pictured as a sheep in wolf’s clothing who depends on deceit and trickery. He is a liar and the father of all lies. Truth means nothing to him, other than when it serves his own purpose.
One of the most common forms of attack is thru doubt. When Satan can get us to doubt the word of God and thus doubt God himself, he has won a major victory and we are on the road to defeat. While we may have not doubt in regard to our theology, what happens when we don’t see an immediate answer to our earnest prayers? What comes natural to us when we suffer or when bad things happen to us or those we love? When we make bad choices and bad results come, do we blame God and wonder why he did not intervene? So the source of our doubting may be from physical illness, or financial reverses, or broken relationships or abuse by someone we trust or unfair treatment in our jobs or even in our families. You see, Satan uses the things all of us must face every day to create doubt in our minds.
Thank God that he is the same deliverer today as he was when this Psalm was written. He is still victorious over all his enemies. The final enemy is death and he is already victorious thru the resurrection of Jesus our Lord. Thus, it is our faith that overcomes the world.
O God, please increase my faith. Open my heart to your Spirit and to your bidding that I may see you in my life. Rid my mind of all doubt and fear so that I don’t worry but trust in you. Give me strength by showing me how to yield to you in complete submission so that I joyfully obey your will. I ask for wisdom to know the difference in squabbles over words and the true knowledge of your word but give me strength to stand for the truth in a spirit of love. Forgive me when I fail. I praise you in Jesus’ name.
