Psalms 8:1-9 (2)

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

When we consider the heavens, the work of God’s finger; what is man that God would be mindful of him? When we consider the majesty of God, the power of God and his total infinity and then we see ourselves in all of our limitations, we have to wonder how God could even acknowledge that we exist. But not only does God know that we exist, he is fully aware of each one of us and all of the things that we face in our daily lives. One of the reasons that God cares so much about us is because we are the workmanship of his mind and his hands. He made us so he cares about us.

Not only does God care about us but he has ordained that mankind be just a little lower than the angels or heavenly beings. He has given us dominion over all of his creation. Upon his triumphal entry at the beginning of his passion week, Jesus said that if one were to silence those who praise God for his glory that even the stones would cry out in praise. Later he quoted from this Psalm for the same reason and said that if adults were silenced that from the mouths of children would come forth praise.

What a comfort indeed and what a faith builder to know that God has never forgotten mankind. To know that he loves us so much that even when we failed to be what we were made to be that he gave his heavenly Son to come to earth and die for our sin. This God will never forget us and has promised to always be with us – no matter what we face. All praise to God above!

O God, full of glory and majesty, please be with those who are hurting and those who are anxious and give them peace. Please forgive me when I take for granted your blessings and fail to thank you for them. I do gratefully acknowledge your presence in my life and acknowledge that you answer my prayers. Fill me with your Spirit that I may become more like you. Give me wisdom and strength to do your will. Help me to study your word more and to better understand what I study. I pray in Jesus’ name.
