Psalms 8:1-9

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

The old American Standard translates verses one and nine as: O Jehovah, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth… This translation gives the sense of the original better than most others but does not seem to flow as well poetically. The point is that not just any Lord or any god has the name that is excellent or majestic. We are told to never take the name of God in vain. We are to honor him by honoring his name. Jesus said we are to let our yes be just a simple yes and our no a simple no without the addition of using God’s name to confirm our word. In Psalms 111 we are told that his name is holy and reverend (some translations use the word awesome).

Have you ever had someone make fun of your name? With my last name being Fudge, you can imagine some of the things I have heard over the years. I usually just laugh and make a joke about it but deep inside I really don’t like for others to make fun of or misuse my name. It is special to me and therefore I like for my name to be shown respect.
How much more the name of Jehovah our Lord! He has set his glory above the heavens in creation. We see his majesty shown in the sun, the moon and the stars. We look at the stars on a dark night and they just go on and on. We see one that is brighter than the others and seems to twinkle but often fail to realize that the earth on which we live is just one of many heavenly bodies in the universe. Even the best of scientist cannot even see all that God has made. How can we not accept him as Lord of all?

O Lord, your name is indeed majestic; your glory above my imagination. I thank you for your love shown to me in giving your Son. Please help me to be more aware of using your name in a way that only shows you are holy. Give me a new sense of respect for you as I look each day at your creation above me in the heavens as well as all around me on the earth. Help me today to be a special help to at least one person. In Jesus’ name.
