34 I will not violate my covenant or alter what my lips have uttered. 35 Once for all, I have sworn by my holiness--and I will not lie to David--36 that his line will continue forever and his throne endure before me like the sun; 37 it will be established forever like the moon, the faithful witness in the sky." Selah/
We live in a world that is so filled with lies, deceit, corruption and blatant greed that it is difficult for us to imagine one in power who is fully faithful to his word. We have learned to never trust anyone and this has led to the philosophy that we must view ourselves as number one and the only person who really counts. This has led us further down the path of corruption fueled by selfishness. We realized years ago that movie and sports figures are not to be held up as role models. CEO’s are looked on with skepticism and distrust. Politicians are disdained as corrupt and considered by most as untrustworthy and therefore as unfaithful stewards in their positions.
God is trustworthy in all things. God cannot (because of his holy nature) lie. God is love and therefore concerned with our good instead of selfishness or what we can give to him. The preacher of Ecclesiastes tells us that the whole purpose for our existence is to fear God and keep his commandments. This is because we are made in his image and therefore made to be like him.
We, in our foolishness, have turned aside from God and followed our own ways leading us to loneliness and despair. Instead of fulfilling God’s dream by becoming creatures of love, concern, kindness and compassion we have become selfish, hateful, bitter and greedy. We look at the “world” around us and see this but do we look honestly into our own hearts? Why is it so easy to fill a stadium (with many being professed Christians) for sports events but so difficult to get these same people to attend church services?
Never has there been a time when we more needed God and the assurance of hope provided by his faithfulness. God has promised us so many things and he cannot lie. However, his promises are based on our being faithful and our willingness to submit to him. Submission means we serve him, we obey him and we allow him to work in us and make us like him. God is faithful.
O God, loving Father, I thank you for your faithfulness in all things. You are the Rock under whose shadow I can hide and find solace from the storms of life. I ask that you help me to be faithful to you. Help me to open my heart for the working of your Spirit. Use my life and my possessions to serve you by serving those around me. Give me opportunity and wisdom to use it to reach others with your Gospel. Forgive me when I am selfish and help me to be caring, loving and kind. Fill me with compassion and show me how to forgive, even as you have forgiven me. I pray in Jesus’ name.
