Thoughts on Psalm 45:1-9

My heart is stirred by a noble theme as I recite my verses for the king; my tongue is the pen of a skillful writer. 2 You are the most excellent of men and your lips have been anointed with grace, since God has blessed you forever. 3 Gird your sword upon your side, O mighty one; clothe yourself with splendor and majesty. 4 In your majesty ride forth victoriously in behalf of truth, humility and righteousness; let your right hand display awesome deeds. 5 Let your sharp arrows pierce the hearts of the king's enemies; let the nations fall beneath your feet. 6 Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom. 7 You love righteousness and hate wickedness; therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy. 8 All your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia; from palaces adorned with ivory the music of the strings makes you glad. 9 Daughters of kings are among your honored women; at your right hand is the royal bride in gold of Ophir.

Among those who discuss such, the object of adoration in this psalm has received much attention. It does seem to portray a king who is being married to a beautiful princess. It may have been an earthly king who was originally honored by the author. However, we know from Hebrews 1:8-9 that this psalm has reference to the coming Messiah. Thus, the king about whom it is written is none other than Jesus, our king and savior.

While many today are waiting on Jesus to come to reign, it is from verses such as these that we know he is already king. He promised that his kingdom would be established in the lifetime of those to whom he spoke on earth. Paul informs us that we, as disciples of Christ, have been made citizens of the kingdom of the Son whom God loves. So where is this kingdom and where is our king? The kingdom of Christ is his body, his church.

When the mother of James and John (the Apostles) came to Jesus and asked that her sons be given a place of special honor in his kingdom, he explained that his kingdom would not be like the earthly kingdoms. On another occasion Jesus was asked by the Pharisees about the kingdom and when it would come. To this he replied that the kingdom of God is within you. It is in our hearts that he reigns as king, while seated on his throne in heaven.

O Lord, give me wisdom to accept the spiritual things that are revealed to us in your word but only understood as your Spirit guides us. Make me a good citizen of your Son’s kingdom as I learn to serve you by serving others. Keep my heart pure, my life clean and my hands busy with your work. Forgive me when I fail to be like you. I pray in the name of Jesus, my king.

May God bless each of us as we live for him and serve him.
