Thoughts on Psalm 42:5-11

5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and 6 my God. My soul is downcast within me; therefore I will remember you from the land of the Jordan, the heights of Hermon--from Mount Mizar. 7 Deep calls to deep in the roar of your waterfalls; all your waves and breakers have swept over me. 8 By day the LORD directs his love, at night his song is with me--a prayer to the God of my life. 9 I say to God my Rock, "Why have you forgotten me? Why must I go about mourning, oppressed by the enemy?" 10 My bones suffer mortal agony as my foes taunt me, saying to me all day long, "Where is your God?" 11 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.

We claim God as our Rock. We say we depend on him in all things. We extol his greatness, his majesty, his power and his love for us. Yet, in the midst of this (in our real lives) we get down and begin to doubt, we become overwhelmed with all the problems and trouble we face and we wonder if God is really there. Does he really see me and does he care? This is the seesaw of the Psalmist in these verses. He declares God’s greatness and then is distraught because he cannot answer “why” to the things in his life.

It may be because others are taunting us and asking us where our God is when we need him. It may be from our own doubt that we wonder why our prayer and our cry seem to go unheard. We know he has promised but we don’t see the answer to our pleading. So we ask, “why, O God, why?”

The answers are varied but seem to be summed up in two concepts. The first is that we trust God, no matter what we think, see or feel. God’s faithfulness is not dependent on our trust. God’s faithfulness is there because he is God! He cannot be unfaithful and still be God.

The second answer is found in another trait of God. He is infinite. That pertains to his abilities; wisdom, knowledge, power, love, sight and so on. It also pertains to time. God is not bound by our time tables and does not see time as we do. That is difficult for us in the short term but waiting on God is what helps build our faith stronger and in turn increases our joy and peace.

O God, I thank you that you are indeed God. I thank you that I can know, without any doubt, that you will do what you say and never fail. I thank you and praise you that you love me and see my every need, hear my every prayer and feel my every pain. Give me faith to wait on you and to see your deliverance. Forgive me when I become impatient and when I doubt you or your goodness. Use me in your will today. I pray in the name of Jesus.

May God bless each of us as we trust him to lead us thru today.
