6 But I am a worm and not a man, scorned by men and despised by the people. 7 All who see me mock me; they hurl insults, shaking their heads: 8 "He trusts in the LORD; let the LORD rescue him. Let him deliver him, since he delights in him." 9 Yet you brought me out of the womb; you made me trust in you even at my mother's breast. 10 From birth I was cast upon you; from my mother's womb you have been my God. 11 Do not be far from me, for trouble is near and there is no one to help.
Matthew 5:3-5
3 Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. 5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.
The Psalmist certainly exemplifies the attitude taught by our Savior in the first of the beatitudes. We see here one who recognized their dependence on God and who has emptied themselves of themselves. The Psalmist had often thrown himself on God and had been delivered from his trouble. This enabled him to have added faith and adequate strength to face whatever came his way. He knew from experience that God is faithful and would always take care of his own. We can have that same assurance.
This seems to have begun from his birth. He was reared by Godly parents who taught him and trained him to trust God. While we may not all have that privilege, we can learn to trust him with our own lives and we can teach it to our children who follow. Never has there been a time when it was more urgent for parents (and grandparents) to be Godly and to teach their children to trust God and live for him.
We are bombarded in our society with anti-God pressures. While probably not always legal (I'm not an attorney so this is not legal advice) the consensus often is that it is ok to ban anything that is Christian and to openly bash it. Yet, it is never (seemingly) legal to openly defend our faith in God and Jesus Christ. We all (young and older) face renewed pressure to deny our faith. We must always put our trust in God and share that faith with those around us when given an opportunity.
O Lord, God of heaven and earth, it is with great humility that I come before you. Yet, with boldness in the name of your Son, I know that I can come to you and that you will hear me. I know that you have a plan for my life and that you know what is best. I therefore ask that you help me know your plan and submit to your will in all things. Use me for your glory, to further your cause, to teach when possible and to always encourage. In Jesus’ name.
May God bless each of us as we trust him and live for him.
