Praise be to the LORD my Rock, who trains my hands for war, my fingers for battle. 2 He is my loving God and my fortress, my stronghold and my deliverer, my shield, in whom I take refuge, who subdues peoples under me. 3 O LORD, what is man that you care for him, the son of man that you think of him? 4 Man is like a breath; his days are like a fleeting shadow. 5 Part your heavens, O LORD, and come down; touch the mountains, so that they smoke. 6 Send forth lightning and scatter [the enemies]; shoot your arrows and rout them. 7 Reach down your hand from on high; deliver me and rescue me from the mighty waters, from the hands of foreigners 8 whose mouths are full of lies, whose right hands are deceitful.
The words of verse 3 are quoted in Hebrews 2 and applied to Jesus to prove that Jesus, while God is man (human-in flesh). However, that quotation is more likely taken from Ps.8:4-5 and not this verse. The emphasis of these verses is that in the overall scheme of things we are small and unimportant and yet God is mindful of us. Not only is he mindful of our existence but he actually cares what happens to us and will take care of us. This is a magnificent concept when we stop and think about it. When we ponder the greatness, the power, the majesty and glory of God and yet he not only sees each of us but even knows the number of the hairs of our heads and is aware of each one that falls.
In other words, the infinity of God extends to his care and love for each of us!
We think we know how to love someone? We may even make huge sacrifices for that person but how does our love compare to the love of God? We are told that God loved us even when we were his enemies. In fact, it was while we were at enmity with him that he gave his very special – unique – Son to die for the sin that we committed against him (the very sin that put us at enmity with him in the first place). This is the love of God for us.
Yes, in the overall scheme of things we don’t really matter. (Do you even know the full name of your great-grandfather?) God does and he knows each of our names! Yes, our life is short and we are small but we can make a huge difference. We can serve God with all our being and we can share the love of God with others around us. Then, only eternity will know our worth.
Lord God, I humbly pray that you will empower me to speak of your love more freely. But even more, I ask that I can demonstrate your great love to all with whom I come in contact today. Please fill me with your Spirit so others will see Jesus living in me. Increase my faith in you and cause me to know and feel that peace and joy that is beyond comprehension. In Jesus name I pray. May God bless each of us as we live in him today.
