Thoughts on Psalm 38:13-22

13 I am like a deaf man, who cannot hear, like a mute, who cannot open his mouth; 14 I have become like a man who does not hear, whose mouth can offer no reply. 15 I wait for you, O LORD; you will answer, O Lord my God. 16 For I said, "Do not let them gloat or exalt themselves over me when my foot slips." 17 For I am about to fall, and my pain is ever with me. 18 I confess my iniquity; I am troubled by my sin. 19 Many are those who are my vigorous enemies; those who hate me without reason are numerous. 20 Those who repay my good with evil slander me when I pursue what is good. 21 O LORD, do not forsake me; be not far from me, O my God. 22 Come quickly to help me, O Lord my Savior.

Why should we trust God? The Psalms resound with trust in God and the assurance that we too can trust him. Why did the Psalmist have so much trust in God? Since as a youth he trusted God it seems that he must have been taught by his parents to do this. But when he appeared before King Saul in preparation to meeting Goliath, the giant, he said the basis of his faith was his past experience. God had always taken care of him.

In the book of Philippians, the Apostle Paul tells us that he had learned to be content in any and every circumstance (wealth or poverty, in prison or free) because he knew God would take care of him. I had an elderly lady who was living a very humble lifestyle with only social security as income, tell me that she had everything she needed or wanted. She said she had just learned to not want very much. She had learned there are things beyond her control.
This makes me wonder how much of our fretting and worrying, our anxiety and depression and our busy running lifestyle could be avoided if we got things in proper perspective. What really matters is not how much we have or how nice our things are. What really matters is what we are and how we use the things God has given us. What God has promised is that he will watch over us and provide our needs. We need to take time to reflect on our own lives and see how God has done this for us. Remove our pride and what we have done and give God the glory. We will see that when it seemed the darkest and most hopeless is when God was there and with calm assurance took us thru. In fact, these are the times we really learned to trust him.

O God, please forgive my lack of faith as I fail to focus my priorities. I thank you for your wonderful love, constant care and abundant provisions in my life. Thank you for using the worst that life can give to make me a better person. Help me to never be bitter but rather loving and forgiving to others. Use me in your service so that I can help others to serve you. In Jesus name.

May God bless each of us as we trust him and live for him today.
