Thoughts on Psalms 35:19-28

19 Let not those gloat over me who are my enemies without cause; let not those who hate me without reason maliciously wink the eye. 20 They do not speak peaceably, but devise false accusations against those who live quietly in the land. 21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it."

22 O LORD, you have seen this; be not silent. Do not be far from me, O Lord. 23 Awake, and rise to my defense! Contend for me, my God and Lord. 24 Vindicate me in your righteousness, O LORD my God; do not let them gloat over me. 25 Do not let them think, "Aha, just what we wanted!" or say, "We have swallowed him up."

26 May all who gloat over my distress be put to shame and confusion; may all who exalt themselves over me be clothed with shame and disgrace. 27 May those who delight in my vindication shout for joy and gladness; may they always say, "The LORD be exalted, who delights in the well-being of his servant." 28 My tongue will speak of your righteousness and of your praises all day long.

What comes to mind when you hear the name of David? He was the sweet Psalmist. He was the shepherd boy who killed Goliath, the Philistine giant. He was the greatest king to ever rule Israel. He was a man after God’s own heart. Or perhaps, you think of his sin with Bathsheba. When we read his story we are impressed with how much of his life was lived as a fugitive, fleeing for his life from King Saul. He spent time living in the open fields, in the caves and in the cities of the enemies of Israel. But why? What had he done to deserve this? The answer is that he had done nothing but try to help Saul and serve him faithfully. He had served him as chief musician, as personal body guard and as a highly successful military leader. What did he get in return? Saul, out of jealousy, spent several years trying to kill David.

If ever there was someone who understood “unfair” and honestly recognized this in his life, it was David. Yet in all this, he never tried to retaliate against Saul nor did he blame God for his plight. He humbly pleaded with God to take care of him and then in total faith submitted to his will while patiently waiting on God’s timing for deliverance. Yes, there are times in our lives that we are treated unfairly but let us emulate David in our response.

O God, I praise you for your deliverance from those that would treat me unfairly today or when the circumstances of life seem so wrong. I thank you for always being with me and taking care of my needs, even when I don’t see it at the moment. Please increase my faith and allot me wisdom to better know you and the peace that only you can give. I pray in the name of Jesus.

May God bless each of us as we humbly serve him today.
