Thoughts on Psalm 29:1-11

Ascribe to the LORD, O mighty ones, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 3 The voice of the LORD is over the waters; the God of glory thunders, the LORD thunders over the mighty waters. 4 The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is majestic. 5 The voice of the LORD breaks the cedars; the LORD breaks in pieces the cedars of Lebanon. 6 He makes Lebanon skip like a calf, Sirion like a young wild ox. 7 The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of lightning. 8 The voice of the LORD shakes the desert; the LORD shakes the Desert of Kadesh. 9 The voice of the LORD twists the oaks and strips the forests bare. And in his temple all cry, "Glory!" 10 The LORD sits enthroned over the flood; the LORD is enthroned as King forever. 11 The LORD gives strength to his people; the LORD blesses his people with peace.

In our society, anything that is as powerful and as awesome as the God described in this Psalm has to be either a fairy tale or an imaginary character in a movie. Growing up seeing Superman fly and Spiderman climb walls and people that can transform into machines, it is difficult for us to grasp the reality of our God who can do all things, know all things and be at any time and place without limits. This mighty God spoke all things into existence and by his mighty power makes all things continue to exist. God is real!

We have all heard the mighty thunder roll accompanied by the flashes of lightning. Add to this the earth trembling and moving and we begin to see what Israel saw and felt when God spoke to them from the mountain. It was so loud and terrifying that the people begged Moses to ask God to not speak directly to them but to speak thru Moses. They could not stand before the presence of God! Our God is real!

Now, remember, this was simply God speaking. It was not him really doing anything to demonstrate his power and majesty. The point of all this for us is to know that God is totally responsible for all that is in existence because of his great power. He is totally in control of all things and nothing escapes his notice. This is the same God that knows each of us individually and loves each of us enough that he gave his Son to die for our sin so that we can live with him eternally. Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name…!

O Lord, God almighty, I do give you all honor. I praise you for your greatness, your power, your majesty and your unspeakable glory. I thank you for your love, your mercy, your grace and the forgiveness this makes available to me thru your Son. Help me to honor you by living for you. I pray in Jesus name.

May God bless each of us as we honor him.
