The LORD is my light and my salvation--whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life--of whom shall I be afraid? 2 When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh, when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall. 3 Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear; though war break out against me, even then will I be confident. 4 one thing I ask of the LORD, this is what I seek: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to seek him in his temple. 5 For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling; he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock. 6 Then my head will be exalted above the enemies who surround me; at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy; I will sing and make music to the LORD.
The Psalmist made a plea to God for his help against his enemies. This plea is made with complete confidence that God would supply the help requested and needed. This confidence is based on several things. First, his enemies are also the enemies of God. Thus God will deal with them. When we look at our lives, are our enemies God’s enemies or are they friends of God? We cannot expect God to turn against his own, so we must be on his side.
What is the number one desire of the Psalmist in this section? Look again at verse 4. His desire was to seek God and be with him in constant fellowship and worship. Too often we want the blessings of God but we put forth little effort to serve him. We make a showing at church (at least once, most weeks) and that is about all we can show for our Christianity. This is not real discipleship. This is religion in modern and self-indulgent form. This is religion that exists to serve me and my needs, not devotion from the heart for God and his ways. By its very definition, a Christian is a follower, a disciple, a learner or an emulator of Jesus Christ. Jesus said that he lived on this earth for one purpose only and that was to do the will of his father. This is why he told us to “seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousne ss”. We serve an infinitely loyal God. When we humbly give him our heart, our soul, our body, our mind; our very lives, then he will be faithful to defend us, protect us and take care of us. He will continue, thru the blood of Jesus, to forgive us when we fail. We are his and he will always be faithful to his own.
O God, giver of life, I come today asking that I may be more committed to you and to living for you. Help me to do your will 24/7 and not just when it is convenient or when I feel like doing it. Help me open my heart to your Spirit that I may be more like you from the inside out. In Jesus name I pray.
May God bless each of us in our commitment and love for him.
