Thoughts on Psalm 24:7-10

7 Lift up your heads, O you gates; be lifted up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 8 Who is this King of glory? The LORD strong and mighty, the LORD mighty in battle. 9 Lift up your heads, O you gates; lift them up, you ancient doors, that the King of glory may come in. 10 Who is he, this King of glory? The LORD Almighty--he is the King of glory. Selah

It has been suggested that this portion of the Psalm is a picture of a triumphal king returning to his city after battle. As he approaches the city, the command is given to the gate keepers to open the gates and welcome the king. The call is answered with a question: “Who is this King of glory?” The reply is given: The LORD Almighty--he is the King of glory.”

Jesus is the King of Glory. He has won the battle over sin and death. Thus he has declared: Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with me. (Rev 3:20) Jesus wants to come in and allow us to celebrate with him his victories. Too often we are so consumed with the mundane affairs of this life that we lose sight of the real life to come. We forfeit the real for that which deceives us for a time. What a blessed thought that we can actually sit and dine with the King of Glory!

One of the great mysteries of God is that he has allowed each of us to decide for ourselves what we will do with this life and what will be our eternal destiny. He could have made us so that we had no choice but to serve him. He could have made it so that like robots, each of us did his bidding in every facet of our lives. But this would not give him the honor and the recognition of his glory that he deserves. By giving us choice, each of us can be controlled by the present, by the things of this world and by the concerns it presents each day. Or we can choose to look beyond the day and see the King of glory, coming in victory to take his own with him to his Royal Land and in humble faith, submit our will to his. In doing this we give him the greatest honor that can be given. We give him our heart and our soul. This is what Jesus declared to be the greatest command ever given; that we love the Lord God with all our heart and soul and mind. Each must ask our self where our allegiance lies and what is the devotion of our hearts. Is it God or is it this world?

O God, increase my faith that I may keep my eyes focused on you. I know that you are already the victor and I share that victory with you eternally. I give you the praise of my lips. I ask for strength and wisdom that I may give you praise by living for you. Fill me with your Spirit today. In Jesus name.

May God bless each of us as we serve the King of Glory today.
