8 Your hand will lay hold on all your enemies; your right hand will seize your foes. 9 At the time of your appearing you will make them like a fiery furnace. In his wrath the LORD will swallow them up, and his fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth, their posterity from mankind. 11 Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot succeed; 12 for you will make them turn their backs when you aim at them with drawn bow. 13 Be exalted, O LORD, in your strength; we will sing and praise your might.
In any battle between God and his enemies, God will always win. In his strength, there is nothing that can stand against him victoriously. Of course, the ultimate enemy of God is Satan and God has already won victory of the strongest weapon and army that Satan can muster; death. In the resurrection of Jesus, God has declared victory for all time over all things. To us this means that when we are in Jesus we too are and will forever be victorious. We just patiently wait on the day that we receive the victors crown in glory.
To enjoy this victory now, in this world with all its problems, trials and temptations, we must do as David did in his life. We must make sure that whatever we consider as our enemy is first of all the enemy of God. Too often we fight battles with enemies that may or may not be what or who God considers his enemy. Go back and read the story of a man named Balaam in Numbers 22-24. There you will find a prophet who tried to curse Israel for the enemy of God but could not do so because Isreal was not God’s enemy.
Balaam trusted God. Balaam asked God for his will in prayer. God told him. But then he continued to try to do his own will against the will of God. He finally was killed with the enemies of God.
God will let us have our way in this life. He is not going to force us to live for him and follow his will. He gives us that choice and it is up to us to study his word, know his will and follow it. There were times in David’s life that he sinned against God. In each of these times it was because he followed his own desires and his own will against what he knew to be the will of God. If a man that God describes as being after his own heart can do this, we must surely be aware of the same danger for us. We also, like David, must recognize our sin when it is pointed out to us and like him, repent of it.
O God, please help me to put to death the old man of sin who lingers in my heart. I know that thru Jesus you have taken away his power but at times he continues to resurface and attempt to lead me astray. Forgive me when I stumble. Give me wisdom to know your will and strength to do it daily. In the name of Jesus I pray.
May God bless each of us today.
