Thoughts on Psalm 20:1-9

May the LORD answer you when you are in distress; may the name of the God of Jacob protect you. 2 May he send you help from the sanctuary and grant you support from Zion. 3 May he remember all your sacrifices and accept your burnt offerings. Selah

4 May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed. 5 We will shout for joy when you are victorious and will lift up our banners in the name of our God. May the LORD grant all your requests.

6 Now I know that the LORD saves his anointed; he answers him from his holy heaven with the saving power of his right hand. 7 Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we tr ust in the name of the LORD our God. 8 They are brought to their knees and fall, but we rise up and stand firm. 9 O LORD, save the king! Answer us when we call!

As David, the king of Israel, prepares to go to battle he gathers the people together to worship God and ask his blessings for victory. It seems in the first five verses the people are praying on his behalf as their leader. In the closing verses, perhaps David, himself is praying or perhaps it is a chorus sung by the entire congregation.

We learn from this the absolute necessity of God’s people praying for their leaders. We are told in the New Testament that we are to do this. It does not matter if we agree or disagree with them, they are put their by God’s power and we are to invoke his blessings on them. Anyone who has any moral sensibilities knows the decadent state of our society, its leaders and those who serve as role models. If ever a society and a country needed God’s guidance and blessings, our county does in our time.

Another l esson we learn from this Psalm is that God does indeed hear our prayer, he answers it and he blesses those who trust in him. Those who depend on their own devises, whether it be their intellect, social theories, technology or their own strength and worth (whether it be individually or as a country) will fail without God. Since God’s timing is not the same as ours we may or may not see it in our time, but it is a rule of God that will not fail.
Pray for our leaders, our county and our society.

O God, I ask that you bless our leaders with a wisdom that only you can give. Help them to know the value of depending on you to guide them. I ask that our society can be reached with the gospel, your only power to save those who are lost. Please be with our country that was founded on your principles that we may properly regard your will as a nation to lead us. Help me to trust you enough to live as your citizen first. I pray in Jesus name.

May God bless each of us as we live in his will above all else.
