I love you, O LORD, my strength. 2 The LORD is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I call to the LORD, who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. 5 The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. 6 In my distress I called to the LORD; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears.
With only a casual reading of this portion of Psalm and one is impressed with the faith of the Psalmist and the majesty of God. David is held up as an example of faith for us to follow as well as being called a man after God’s own heart. Yet, when we read his story we see a man who struggled with all kinds of temptations, trials and hardships. At times he gave in to these and sinned, while at other times he overcame. At times he seemed to despair because of the problems in his life, yet even in these he trusted in his God to deliver him and provide for him. How did he develop this kind of faith?
First, he was honest. He was honest with himself and with God. In his honesty he would admit when he was wrong. He admitted when he needed help because of his own weaknesses or limitations. When he sinned and was confronted with it, he admitted he had sinned and asked God to forgive him. He also was honest with his life and circumstance. When God delivered him from a bear and a lion, he did not call it “good luck” or being “fortunate”, he admitted God’s loving providence. From this beginning, he began to see God in his life. The more he saw God the more he depended on God to provide for him and protect him and deliver him from all his trials.
Do we see God in our lives? He is here with us each day. Yet, how many times have we attributed the answer to our prayers to “good luck” or something other than to God? God provides our needs but do we thank him for this? God delivers us from temptation and harm; do we praise him for this? God gives us strengt h to face our struggles but do we love him for this? Let’s open our eyes of faith and see God in our lives.
O God, I do love you for all you do in my life. I know you deliver me from so many evils, temptations, trials and hardships. Please open my eyes that I may see you more clearly in all my life. Open my heart that I can praise you, thank you and tell of your goodness. I thank you for being a God of love, compassion and kindness. I thank you for your grace shown to me thru your Son and the working of your Spirit in my life. I pray in Jesus name.
May God bless each of us as we open our eyes to see him today.
