Keep me safe, O God, for in you I take refuge. 2 I said to the LORD, "You are my Lord; apart from you I have no good thing." 3 As for the saints who are in the land, they are the glorious ones in whom is all my delight. 4 The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods. I will not pour out their libations of blood or take up their names on my lips. 5 LORD, you have assigned me my portion and my cup; you have made my lot secure. 6 The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; surely I have a delightful inheritance. 7 I will praise the LORD, who counsels me; even at night my heart instructs me. 8 I have set the LORD always before me. Because he is at my right hand, I will not be shaken. 9 Therefore my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices; my body also will rest secure, 10 because you will not abandon me to the grave, nor will you let your Holy one see decay. 11 You have made known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.
Did you ever stay awake at night because of feeling guilty, or because of worrying, or because of grief? An uneasy and troubled mind is one of the worst things we are called upon to endure. We often regret the past in which we have made terrible mistakes or we face the unknown dreaded future and are thus filled with suffering. This Psalm gives us at least two reasons why this worry and fear is not necessary.
The first is because God has promised to take care of us. We can be glad, rejoice, praise God and rest secure because God has seen our plight and will attend to our every need. Be anxious for nothing, the Lord is near.
Another solace is that no matter what we face in this life, it is temporary. Paul said that it is so small in comparison to the glory and splendor of heaven and being in the presence of our Lord that it does not even count. It seems big now but we should never loose sight of our eternal home. It is for this reason that we are told that we are saved by hope. This is also why we are told to keep our minds and hearts set on things that are above, where Christ is seated at the right hand of God. So even in the midst of our worst trials we can praise God and go to him with thanksgiving while offering him our prayers and petitions. He has promised to then give us his peace.
O God, please help me to keep this life in proper perspective so that I never loose sight of what is to come. Fill me with your hope so I can rest securely in your arms. Increase my faith as you shelter me from harm. Help me to open my heart to be filled with your love so I can be an encouragement to others. Bless those who are hurting. I pray in the name of Jesus, my Lord.
May God bless each of us as we rest securely in him today.
