Thoughts on Psalm 8

O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. 2 From the lips of children and infants you have ordained praise because of your enemies, to silence the foe and the avenger. 3 When I consider your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, 4 what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? 5 You made him a little lower than the heavenly beings and crowned him with glory and honor. 6 You made him ruler over the works of your hands; you put everything under his feet: 7 all flocks and herds, and the beasts of the field, 8 the birds of the air, and the fish of the sea, all that swim the paths of the seas. 9 O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!

There are times when we need to sit and meditate in deep reflection of who we are, where we came from and where we are going. As we do this we are naturally drawn toward the God who created us. As we meditate on God we must praise his majestic name! When we consider our total dependence on him, beginning with the creation of all things and how small we are individually in the overall scheme of this, we identify with the question above; what is man that you are mindful of him, the son of man that you care for him? It is with this reflection that we first praise God above all else and all others, he alone is God. We then realize our need to trust him in humble submissive obedience. We do not obey because we are afraid of him or what he might do to us, although we believe that each of us will stand before him in judgment. He is not a god who is filled with anger as his nature, who must be appeased by our good deeds or by our sacrificial pain and suffering. He is not a god who, by nature wants to find us guilty and punish us for our misdeeds. God is not so big, so high and mighty, so powerful and wise that he forgets his creation. He is aware of each of us, individually aware, and his desire for us is our ultimate good. He is by nature so loving, so kind and gracious that he has been motivated in his infinite wisdom to devise a plan for us to be forgiven and eventually live with him in complete harmony in eternity. This eternal fellowship is only available by coming to him thru the sacrificial death of his Son, Jesus Christ.

O God, how majestic is your name in all the earth! You have set your glory above the heavens. In your infinite power you have not forgotten me but have placed me in your love and your care thru your Son. I thank you and I praise you. Increase my faith that I may live for you. Fill me with your Spirit that I may grow into your likeness. I offer this prayer in the name of Jesus.

May God bless each of us as we praise him in our lives today.
